Fresh Job Seekers

My main aim is to blog on any topic under the sun on which I have good knowledge. But I want to make sure that it should help someone in some way in their life.

So to start with I am planning to talk on fresher’s job search. When I was in college I use to wonder what people are doing in software industry sitting all the time before a computer and was always awestruck with the salary they earn. I did my engineering in computer science and to be honest, I never coded even a single program on my own in my college. Not only me there are couple of my best friends who belong to my category. Even the 10 line program we code will throw 100 errors. So we were very confident that unless otherwise some miracle happens we will not get a job in software industry.

But today I am working in one of the top MNC’s in INDIA. So my dear fresher friends I would say nothing is impossible in this world and I didn’t get this job by luck. It is true that I didn’t learn about the technology when I was in college but after I wrote my final semester exams fear started to take hold of me. The fear of future and the hard work of my parents and their anticipations made me to work on getting a job.

I am not saying that I without putting any effort to learn the technology in my college days, got my job easily after my college. This cannot happen even in dreams. There is a famous phrase “AS YOU SOW SO SHALL YOU REAP”, the seed which I sow during my college days made me to suffer later for almost 10 months without a job. All my other friends got settled quickly and every interview I attended failed. Those days I use to feel if GOD will give me one more chance to study my engineering I would do it properly. I started to regret for my deeds. But as all of us know Time will not wait for any one. Instead of worrying about the past I started asking my friends the secrets behind their success and used those in my life.

So my dear college goers and freshers here is the thumb rule to get a job.

1) Be confident with at least one of the software languages. Be a Master of it. You need not necessarily master every subjects like operating system, data structures, C, JAVA, etc... But be a master of one language AND jack of all the other subjects in your syllabus.
2) Try to speak with your friends in English only. It might be funny when you start it in the beginning. I knew many of us are from villages where we don’t get any opportunity to talk in English. Don’t feel shy that other friend in your class might make fun of you. After of all it is not an Indian language to feel bad and we don’t feel bad if we don’t know any of the other Indian languages like hindi or kannada, so why to feel bad if we don’t know a foreign language. But respect it and learn it as it feeds 90% of the Indians.
3) Prepare well for the interviews. Learn about the company interviewing you before attending the interview. Take mock interviews before going for the real one.
4) Take care of your body language. Learn the DO’s and DONT’S you should follow in your interview.
5) Last but not the least believe in you. Even mountains can be moved if we believe.

I will discuss in detail about each of them in my future posts and am planning to start a tutorial for C in the upcoming posts. In the interim, if you feel that this blog is useful you can leave your comment. Also I would be happy if you can ask me any technology related queries. I had worked on C, JAVA, JAVASCRIPT, UNIX, AN ERP, PRO*C, ORACLE AND SQL. If you want me to start a tutorial for any of these other languages which they use in your college I would be pleased to do it.
